Bridging the Gap: Carpathian Biodiversity Experts Get Communication Boost

A collaborative effort led by Prof. Dr Daniel Fischer (Leuphana University of Lüneburg (Germany)) and Dr Agnieszka Wypych (The Human-Environmental Systems Research Centre at Jagiellonian University, Kraków (Poland)), alongside independent consultant Dr Tamara Mitrofanenko, has submitted a groundbreaking grant proposal!

This initiative aims to empower young biodiversity experts from Carpathian countries. The project recognizes the critical role of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in achieving the goals of the Carpathian Convention, a regional agreement promoting the region’s sustainable development and biodiversity preservation.

The Challenge: Communication & Collaboration

The project acknowledges a gap – stakeholders often lack crucial skills in ESD and transdisciplinary learning. This hinders effective communication between science, policy, and civil society in tackling environmental challenges.

The Solution: Training & Collaboration

The proposed project seeks to address this gap through a multi-pronged approach:

  • Summer Schools: Early-career researchers will be equipped with practical tools and knowledge in ESD and transdisciplinary communication through specialised summer schools.
  • Transdisciplinary Modules: Bachelor and Master students at the Universities of Lüneburg and Krakow will participate in a unique university module that fosters collaboration across disciplines related to sustainability and geography.
  • Policy Recommendations: Project findings will be used to develop recommendations for promoting sustainable practices and long-term biodiversity conservation in the Carpathian region.

Innovation at the Core

This project brings a fresh perspective by:

  • Connecting Science, Policy & Practice: Building bridges between researchers, policymakers, and the public.
  • Boosting Communication Skills: Equipping young professionals to effectively advocate for biodiversity conservation.
  • Fostering Collaboration: Encouraging a collaborative approach to tackling environmental challenges in the Carpathian Mountains.

In addition to Dr Agnieszka Wypych, Dr Magdalena Kubal-Czerwińska, Prof. Dr Małgorzata Luc, and Prof. Dr Małgorzata Pietrzak were involved in designing the proposal on behalf of the Human-Environmental Systems Research Centre. Thank you!

Stay tuned for further details on how this exciting project can empower young Carpathian biodiversity experts and contribute to a more sustainable future for the region!
